Green by Name, Green by Nature

  • Founder and designer of Green Cotton.

β€˜With a Masters degree in Chemistry, human health has always been at the heart of what I do. After working in both pharmaceutical and medical industries, I have seen first hand what a huge benefit chemicals have to us. However when used irresponsibly, I have also witnessed the impact this has on our environment.

This has made me conscious of the materials we surround ourselves with and their origins. With this ethos in mind, Green Cotton was born to create sustainably sourced, lasting products for your home.

The more time I have spent creating macrame, the more I want to pass on my knowledge to others to keep the craftsmanship alive.’

Hello! Let me introduce you to Green Cotton.

Green Cotton was born after I decided to create a dyed fibre art piece for my home and realised the sheer volume of water waste produced. Although I aimed to reduce the environmental impact by using non-toxic & vegan dyes, there was an enormous amount of dyed water used that then entered our sewage system and it didn’t feel right.

In fact, the textile industry is estimated to be responsible for about 20% of global clean water pollution from dyeing and finishing products.

I do not use dye in any of my work now.

The cottons I use to create my fibre art have been made by recycling excess materials from the textile industry, which are mixed into various colours instead of being dyed. The cottons are made in the UK, using renewable energy sources - something I am very proud of. You can find out more here.

I considered using organic cottons as these are less polluting than conventional cotton but this does not address the growing amount of cotton waste across the globe.

β€œGlobally, an estimated 92 million tonnes of textiles waste is created each year - the equivalent to a rubbish truck full of clothes being thrown on landfill sites every second.”

Instead, I use recycled cottons to reduce the production of new materials (and it’s associated negative impacts of the industry, like CO2 emissions, water and chemical use) by using materials already in circulation and diverting waste from landfill.

I am proud that our oak dowels are FSC certified. I personally cut and sand these to size and no chemicals are used to treat the wood - 100% natural & sustainably sourced.

In a world of mass production and consumption, we need to slow down and take a little time to reconnect with the items we surround ourselves with. That is why it is important to us to keep the craftsmanship of these traditional macrame techniques alive - to remember that these pieces took both physical and creative resources to make it.

Our pieces are made slowly by hand in our Berkshire home studio. No machine can replace the love, care and creativity that goes into each and every one.

100% vegan & cruelty free.

We are Proud of our Values

  • An incredible amount of research has been undertaken to ensure my products and all the packaging they are delivered in are plastic free.

  • I am proud that I do not dye any products.

All my FSC certified solid oak dowels are chemical free (most driftwood has to be chemically treated or bleached).

I also do not use any glues, setting agents, fixing sprays etc.

  • Everything is created in my little Berkshire studio in the UK.

My recycled cottons are made here in the UK, using renewable energy.

FSC certified oak dowels are sourced from a UK supplier.

As much as possible, I aim to purchase all other materials (such as vegan stickers, stamps, postal boxes etc.) from small UK suppliers with the same ethos.

  • No wool, leather or any animal products are used in our pieces.

Did you know not all adhesives, stickers & inks are vegan? I have undertaken a lot of research to ensure everything is 100% vegan & cruelty free

  • The oak dowels I use are FSC certified. Something I am incredibly proud of as these are typically not sustainably sourced.

The cardboard packaging, wood wool (an eco friendly alternative to shredded paper), packing tapes, tissue paper, stickers, business/thank you cards are all made from sustainable materials.

  • My 100% recycled cottons are made using excess materials from the textile industry, and are made using renewable energy sources in the UK.

I aim for all cardboard packaging, packing tapes, tissue paper, business cards, stickers to be biodegradable, recyclable and plastic free.
